About Aughton, West Lancashire

Aughton, is situated in West Lancashire midway between Liverpool and Southport. Seven miles inland from the Irish Sea.

According to the Doomsday survey of the land between the rivers Mersey and Ribble in 1086 we find Uctred, a Saxon Thane, held Acketun, meaning Oak Farm or Oak Town.

Acketun, higher than the surrounding countryside attracted the early Anglican settlers who chose a site near the earthworks of Celts or earlier tribes. In those days the whole area would be a wilderness of woods, moors and mosses.

Except for the battle of Aughton in 1644 when Cromwell's men routed the the Royalists at Cromfield, both history and the industrial revolution have passed her by.

Today the area is mainly agricultural, well served by the M57, M58 and M6 Motorways
